Originally introduced to Afognak Island in the early 20th century, Roosevelt elk have established one of the most unique hunts in Alaska. Known for their impressive size, distinctive bugle, and strong herd behavior, Roosevelt elk are the largest bodied subspecies of elk in North America.
Afognak’s mild maritime climate, abundant foliage, and diverse habitat have allowed the population to thrive. Mature bulls can grow impressive antlers and are often found in a mix of forested valleys, open meadows, and alpine terrain throughout the hunting season. For many hunters, pursuing Roosevelt elk in Alaska offers the rare opportunity to combine a classic elk hunt with the remote wilderness and coastal scenery of the Kodiak Islands.
Elk hunting on Afognak Island is an active, spot-and-stalk hunt conducted across a variety of terrain. Depending on the elk activity, hunters may spend time glassing open hillsides, moving through old-growth forest, or hiking ridgelines and alpine meadows in search of animals.
Access by boat allows guides to reach productive hunting areas throughout the island, often beginning each day by traveling to remote bays and shorelines before continuing on foot. Hunting conditions can vary significantly throughout the season.
The result is a rewarding hunt that comes from the challenge of pursuing Roosevelt elk in one of Alaska’s most remarkable landscapes.
